This week I started using an old school alarm clock! I had no idea how much of a difference it would make for getting out of bed in the morning. I tend to get caught up scrolling on social media in the morning, but now I don’t keep my cell phone in my room, so I gotta get up!
My favorite instagram of the week is The Pod! I love seeing podiatrists from around the world.
I listened to this podcast on my morning walk yesterday… horrible idea. It is so good, but terrifying!!! My walk turned into a sprint home 😂🏃🏼♀️. Despite my fears, I still highly recommend.
Whenever I take a practice exam, I right down any questions I have and then go back and answer them after the test. I have been using these notebooks, and I love them. Perfect size, and super cute!
I feel like summer has finally arrived in Ohio! So we had some fun this weekend.
Friday night we went to the Indians game, and we won. Woohoo!
On Saturday I went out to dinner for a girls’ night with my classmates.
Sunday we did a (much needed) deep clean of the the apartment. I have never been an organized person by nature, and neither is Andrew, so the house gets messy really fast. It feels so refreshing, so hopefully it lasts!
I’ve been having one of those weeks where I am SO tired! So this coffee has been getting me through.
We are going to an Indians game tonight, Might have to pick up this cutie for the game.
Fun Fact: Podiatry students get a pro discount with several shoe companies, including Brooks and Asics. So, I’ve been eyeballing these shoes for a while. Running and walking outside are keeping me sane during boards studying!
This article on productivity really put things into perspective.
If you’re interested in medicine, health, or just a positive attitude: this lady is killing it in all three categories. Her instagram is so motivating!
Monday started off with a bang! Literally. I blew a tire on the interstate 🤦🏼♀️
So yesterday and today have been spent ordering tires, driving around on a “donut” spare (which had a max speed of 50 mph), and wasting precious study time!
Not ideal when boards are a month away.
I also ordered by new tires from Costco. So, while I was waiting, I probably consumed 9847589047562398742 calories.
Whenever I talk about my life as a student with friends and family who aren’t in the medical field, I feel like no one really understands what our day to day life is really like. People either think that school is like Grey’s Anatomy or that it’s basically the same thing as undergrad.
While it is true that there are weeks when I study well over 80 hours, there are other times when I have two weeks off. It all balances out.
So, here’s what it has really been like for me:
You can have a social life!
You will miss out on things…
Your classmates will be amazing, and probably become your best friends.
You will be able to travel.
Prioritizing is KEY!
Before starting school, I even thought that all of my twenties would be devoted to studying, and there would be no time for fun. Thankfully, that is so not true! Over the past two years I have been able to travel all over the country, spend holidays with family, plan a wedding, make new friends, and explore Cleveland!
Celebrating my 25th birthday with classmates! Our school’s annual formal, AKA the “Foot Ball”At a friends wedding in Colorado, it was so special that we got to be there.I went to Utah with my besties last summer for a camping trip!We went to Austin for my Bachelorette weekend 😊
If you are thinking about going into medicine, especially podiatry school, don’t let the work load intimidate you! You will be able to squeeze some fun into your busy schedule.
School is important, but I would argue that relationships, especially with your family, are the MOST important.Prioritize the people in your life and the rest will fall into place. Whether you are thriving or struggling you need a support system!
This week I had a little “Treat Yo Self” moment and bought some fresh flowers. They look so cute in our little apartment, I wish they would last forever.
Still reading this book… it is so scary. I don’t think I will ever go on a cruise after reading it.
Tomorrow I am going to a bridal shower brunch, I am hoping that it will be warm enough to wear this dress that I bought a couple of weeks ago.
Eight nine days until boards! I know it is going to fly by!!
Do I order these? Or do I save myself from the temptation? The Reeses’ egg is just the best candy…
One of the fantastic, and unique, aspects of our program is that lecture attendance is not required. The lectures are recorded so you can watch them whenever and wherever you want… it’s amazing.
So, for me, I like to mix it up. Some days I go to all my lectures, it’s nice to see your classmates and teachers, and to ask any questions you may have. On other days, I watch lectures from home!
There are pros and cons to both so I thought I would discuss the advantages of both and go through my schedule when I work from home. (I’ll do a day I go to school on another day!)
My cute home office makes me so happy.
At Home
NO COMMUTE! We live about thirty minutes from school, so working from home is really nice. Sitting in traffic just feels like such a waste of time, and honestly makes me grumpy!
During study breaks I can get some cleaning, meal prepping, laundry, and now blogging done. At school, I can get caught up chatting with people, so at home I can focus on non school-related productivity.
Cooking! When I study from home, I have more time to make a nice dinner. I try to make a point of cooking dinner at least once a week and spending the evening with my husband and off the computer.
There are less distractions at home than at school! No one to chat with, no spontaneous Starbucks trips, no drama.
At School
FRIENDS! Okay, so if you know me, you know I love to talk! Sometimes when I work from home, I don’t talk to anyone the entire day. By the time Andrew gets home I am dying for some social interaction. I enjoy going to school and keeping up with my classmates!
Going to class gives you an opportunity to be face to face with your professor. There are about 100 people in my class, an on an average day, there are probably 25 people in lecture. It can separate you from your classmates if your teacher knows your name and face.
Accountability! When I study alone I tend to make excuses for myself and slack off, because no one will know if you watched an hour of Real Housewives if you’re home alone. But, at school, some one would call you out!
Determining your own schedule can be a challenge, so, when I go to school it is all laid out for me. No need to stress about it!
My Day at Home
7:15 AM: I wake up! Scroll through instagram, make a cup of coffee, and futz around the apartment for a little while.
8:00 AM: I sit down at my desk, in my pajamas, and watch a pharmacology lecture.
10:00 AM: I finish the lecture, it was a long one! Then I fold a load of laundry, get dressed, and (just being transparent here) watch some TV. I do make sure that I actually get dressed even if I work at home, preferably in jeans, because I think it’s important to get ready to take on the day, even if you aren’t leaving the house.
11:30 AM: Okay, back at my desk. Time to watch another pharm lecture, I am almost caught up from the ones I missed studying for exams!
1:07 PM: Woohoo! Second pharm lecture done. Now it’s time for some lunch…
I had scrambled eggs with spinach, onions, bell pepper, and jalapeños, and a piece of toast. Not pretty, but delicious!
1:53 PM: Lunch: eaten. Kitchen: cleaned. Another load of laundry: done. Cookies eaten: 2. Now, it’s time to start some boards prep. (90 days until test day!!!)
5:00 PM: I finish up studying for the day 😊. I made some progress studying micro and biochemistry in First Aid, and then reviewed my Lower Anatomy notes from last year.
5:45 PM: Andrew texts me saying he is running late so I pour myself a glass of wine and start this podcast.
6:30 PM: Andrew arrives home and I start making dinner. Tonight we are having pork chops with a white wine sauce, it’s one of my favorites!
7:30 PM: We are done with dinner, and we clean up the kitchen. I am a messy chef, so the kitchen looks like a bomb went off.
7:30-10:00 PM: I hang out with my husband, watch some TV, and read a few chapters of this book, it is so scary!
10:00 PM: Lights out! I’ll be up early tomorrow so gotta get them zzzz’s.
This Spring Break we went to Puerto Rico for a little delayed honeymoon! We had such a wonderful time seeing all the colorful buildings of San Juan and having a few too many mojitos.
I mean how amazing are these colors?!
We stayed at La Concha, which had the most beautiful beach and pool!
Spring Break is a great opportunity to catch up on sleep, rest, and to return to school recharged. But, if I am being honest, getting up for school this morning was tough!
